When will the snow and ice melt in Nashville?

Frigid temperatures are keeping Middle Tennessee blanketed with snow and ice on Friday.

Between 1.5 and 2 inches of sleet and snow had built up across the region as of late Wednesday morning, NWS Nashville meteorologist Brendan Schaper said. Between Wednesday and Thursday, anywhere between 2 and 6 inches fell across the region.

Nashville accumulated three to four inches and Clarksville two to three inches, while Columbia, Waynesboro and Lafayette totaled four to five inches.

"The big winners were southern Wayne, Lawrence, and Giles Counties which reported 6" of snow!" the NWS in Nashville said in a tweet Friday morning.

FRIDAY UPDATES:No more snow expected in Nashville area Friday, but will be frigid

Juan Lopez, 25, of Antioch, TN shovels out a path for his car in his unplowed apartment complex in attempts to get home.

Temperatures won't warm up enough to substantially melt the snow, sleet and ice until Saturday, Schaper said. How much will melt also depends on how long the sun stays out and how dense the layers of ice, sleet and snow become.

"Well stay at or below freezing (temperatures) through Friday afternoon," he said. "We won't climb above it until Saturday afternoon. When you start making that frozen sandwich, for lack of a better term, it's not going anywhere, even with treatment."

The Tennessee Department of Transportation reported that it had applied thousands of tons of salt across Middle Tennessee since Monday. But even with salting, not all ice can be avoided as conditions change and frigid temperatures persist.
