St. Amant, Ascension Catholic reach softball state tournament
The Ascension Catholic and St. Amant softball teams advanced to the state championship tournament set for Friday and Saturday in Sulphur.
In Division I nonselect, No. 3 seed St. Amant will meet No. 2 Southside at 5 p.m. Friday on field 14 at Frasch Park. The winning team will face the victor of No. 4 Ponchatoula and No. 8 Live Oak.
The championship game for the division will be played at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Gators advanced to the state tournament for the third year in a row.
In Division IV select, No. 5 Ascension Catholic will take on No. 1 Opelousas Catholic at noon Friday on field 13. If the Bulldogs from Donaldsonville can upset the top seed, they will meet the winner of No. 2 Catholic Pointe Coupee and No. 6 Sacred Heart.
Ascension Parish was well represented in the 2024 brackets.
No. 1 seed Dutchtown topped No. 17 Hahnville in five innings in the regional round before falling to No. 8 Live Oak in a 4-0 quarterfinal game.
No. 12 East Ascension edged No. 5 West Monroe 11-10 in the regional round before losing to Ponchatoula 14-12 in the quarterfinals.
St. Amant was able to reach the semifinals by defeating No. 14 Central 16-0 and No. 6 Sam Houston 9-8.
In Division IV select, No. 8 Ascension Christian lost in the regionals to No. 9 Ouachita Christian 2-1.
Ascension Catholic defeated No. 12 Covenant Christian 12-0 and No. 4 St. Frederick 11-5.
