A 9-year-old boy in Brentwood is dead after a sledding accident.

The sledding accident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Seward Road after Campbell Martin, who was pulled on a tube by an ATV driven by his father, slammed into a mailbox after hitting ice. He was taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Three other children were on the tube but weren't injured, Brentwood Police Department Assistant Chief Richard Hickey said.

Scales Elementary Principal Melonye Lowe confirmed Campbell was a student at the school.

“Campbell was loved by our students and staff," she said in a statement to The Tennessean. "He had a sweet smile and a kind and respectful spirit. He loved sports and he played as hard as he worked. He was such a positive light in his classroom every day. Campbell will forever be loved and missed by our Scales family.”

A GoFundMe was created to raise money for the family. By Wednesday night, over $25,000 was raised.

The death remains under investigation by Brentwood police.

This is at least the second sledding accident to occur in Williamson County. A 3-year-old in Franklin plunged into the Harpeth River Tuesday while sledding and was rescued by their mother.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
