An Ascension Parish man pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the 2016 fatal shooting of his fiancée, according to the 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office and published reports.

According to a news release, 33-year-old Jarvis McNair of Gonzales shot 36-year-old Shondrica Dejoie in the face at the intersection of Interstate 10 and Hwy. 22.

Dejoie, also of Gonzales, later died at a hospital.

Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Sorrento intersection July 5, 2016, per the release, and found Dejoie in the driver seat of her vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the face.

According to the release, McNair was administering CPR after calling 911 to report the shooting and was detained at the time pending further investigation.

Detectives reportedly learned that McNair was chasing Dejoie's vehicle before positioning his vehicle to block the interstate on-ramp.

According to the release, McNair exited the vehicle and approached the driver side of the other vehicle before the two engaged in a verbal argument.

McNair reportedly brandished a firearm and shot once into the vehicle, striking Dejoie.

Per the release, McNair gave multiple statements regarding the events, including admission to firing the handgun and striking Dejoie.

As previously reported by The Advocate, Dejoie was in her vehicle while their 10-month-old son was sitting in a back seat at the time.

McNair had been scheduled for a second-degree murder trial before agreeing to a plea deal with prosecutors, according to the Baton Rouge newspaper's report.

McNair pled guilty April 16, and sentencing was set for Aug. 13.

McNair reportedly faces 40 years in state prison after accepting a plea deal with prosecutors.
