Winter weather in Jackson: What you need to know about water, trash pickup, other services

An extended winter storm system is once again delaying the opening of city offices, the airport and other services in Jackson.

City Hall and all city offices will remain closed Thursday due to unsafe driving conditions. City employees who can work remotely are expected to continue doing so.

The Jackson airport board has extended the closure of the Jackson-Medgar Evers Wiley Airport and Hawkins Field Airport until 11 p.m. Friday. The airport's safety and operations team continues to assess conditions to determine when to safely reopen both airports, the board said.

A water faucet runs outside the horse stalls at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds in Jackson, Miss., Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021. The fairground maintenance crew is running the water in order to keep the water lines from freezing.

JTRAN will again be closed due to the winter weather conditions and road closures.

Waste Management is also suspending trash pickup for Central Mississippi customers. The company will resume services when road conditions are deemed safe to travel.

All 14 libraries in the Jackson Hinds Library System will remain closed Thursday and Friday.

Temperatures are expected to hover near the freezing point throughout the day Thursday, which means ice accumulation on city roads will continue to be an issue.

The city is advising residents to continue to exercise caution when going outside and to avoid any unnecessary travel.

Boil water notice, water pressure

Jackson also remains under a citywide boil water notice, and many residents have little to no water pressure. Crews are working to get water pressure restored across the system, but additional cold weather Thursday night will impact the recovery time, the mayor's office said. The city said it does not have a definitive timeline on when that might happen.

The city is asking for patience from residents and to reserve calls for visible water leaks or urgent needs for assistance. The city can be reached at 601-960-1777, 601-960-1781, 601-960-1778, 601-960-0379 or 601-960-1779.
