Twelve northeast Louisiana pharmacies received limited doses of Moderna'a COVID-19 vaccine on Monday.

The deliveries are part of a statewide vaccine distribution to 107 pharmacies across Louisiana. Forty-five chains and 62 independent pharmacies were chosen and represent 51 parishes and all nine health regions.

The vaccines are arriving as eight NELA parishes continue to see an increase in percent positivity, or the percentage of COVID-19 tests returning positive results. Ouachita and West Carroll are reporting the largest increases, and Lincoln, Jackson, Caldwell and Tensas are the only NELA parishes reporting a decline. The positivity rate is based on Dec. 17-23 testing data.

COVID-19 hospitalizations also reached an all-time high in Region 8 on Sunday at 191. The hospitalization total passed 150 for the first time on Dec. 3 and has stayed at 150 and above since Dec. 8. Ventilator usage peaked at 41 patients on Jan. 1.

The Moderna vaccines will be available only for those in Phase 1B, Tier One:

  • People 70 and above
  • Home health services patients and staff
  • Ambulatory and outpatient health care personnel
  • Residents, students and staff of schools of allied health
  • People being treated for end-stage renal disease (patients on dialysis)

Eligible residents must contact a participating pharmacy and make an appointment. Patients who arrive without an appointment will not be vaccinated.

The Louisiana Department of Health is coordinating the COVID-19 vaccine distribution effort in Louisiana. As additional vaccines become available from the CDC, vaccination efforts will expand to more groups.

A full list of participating pharmacies statewide, along with their locations and contact information is available on the LDH website: www.covidvaccine.la.gov.
